Sudden-Lee, Phils Pitcher Hittable And Beatable
July 26th 2011 14:32
Are hitters starting to figure Cliff Lee out a little bit, or perhaps even more?
The toast of Philadelphia has been hittable of late, and even beatable in dropping to 9-7 with an ERA just over 3.00.
Respectable numbers to be sure, but not the all-world stats we have come to expect to one of the most feared pitchers in baseball.
And consider this, the Phillies starter got knocked around for 10 hits and five runs in just four innings Monday afternoon in a 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres.
It marked the second time in four starts, including three losses, in which Lee gave up double-digit hits.
Lee wasn't even spectacular in his lone win over that span, giving up eight hits with a homer, in a 4-2 conquest of the lowly Cubs.
Lee's biggest strength is probably his control, which hasn't betrayed him during this slump.
The ex-Tribe starter has given up just three walks in his last four outings.
This may sound strange, but perhaps Lee needs to throw fewer strikes or at least work the edges of the strike zone more,
When batters know a pitcher throws strikes they tend to get a little too comfortable in the batter's box.
An old pro like Lee, with nearly a decade in the bigs, will likely make the adjustments he needs to maintain his success.
