Same Old, New Tiger: Inconsistent, Irritated
August 6th 2011 17:18
One good solid round, followed by two mediocre ones.
Meet the new Tiger Woods, same as the old new Tiger Woods.
Time away from the course, and the surprise firing of caddy Steve Williams hasn't helped Tiger, who shot a 2-over par 72 Saturday, following up an unimpressive 71 Friday.
Overall, he is 1-over par 211, 11 shots behind four golfers who had yet to tee off on the day at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
Tiger, one of the most popular golfers of all-time even as he mistreats people and condescends to reporters, hasn't changed personally even as his game has taken a dive.
"Today was not very good," ... "The path wasn't very good going back. It was underneath the path and it was under the plane, and it was just not very good," Woods said after Friday's round.
Yet Tiger remains delusional, at least outwardly, about his play and chances for success.
"Why show up at a tournament if you're not there to win?" he said when the question was repeated. "There's no reason to come."
Asked if perhaps it was too bold a proclamation to make based on his shaky play, Tiger shot back: "I'm not other guys."
That's true, he's not like the many players behind him in the rankings.
For the first time in a long time, however, Tiger is not as good as 20 players ahead of him in the same rankings.
