Mets' Star Reyes Hard To Root For
July 11th 2011 18:28
I'll be the first to admit José Reyes is having a remarkable season for the New York Mets.
With 22 doubles 15 triples and 65 runs scored heading into the All-Star break, Reyes is poised to break his career marks in several categories.
His 354 batting average and dazzling play in the field have made him an MVP candidate.
Yet I still have trouble rooting for the guy.
Whether it's because he missed so many games the last two seasons due to injury, or the fact that he plays for a mediocre team I just can't warm up to Reyes.
Another thing that troubles me is this is Reyes is walk-year so he is in effect playing for a contract.
More power to him, and Reyes did post four straight solid seasons from 2005-08, collecting 190 hits or more each campaign.
But what explains 2011?
Is he finally giving 100%, whereas in previous seasons he was capping off at 80% or 85%?
Should he have been given just that percentage of his salary, then?
Maybe, to give him credit, Reyes is finally maturing into a superb all-around ballplayer.
Perhaps I'm a cynical ex-New Yorker but I don't trust this situation, and Reyes is also on the disabled list again.
If I were in the Mets front-office I would bid to sell high, while Reyes' star still shines brightly.
