Leaving Long Island? Islanders Not In NY State Of Mind
August 1st 2011 02:50
It's been a long time, and the team had a great run ... in the 1980's.
But it's probably time for the New York Islanders to go ... to Kansas City.
Kansas City here we come ... as an old song goes ... as rumors in recent years have suggested.
It may come true after the 2015 season when the team's lease runs out at Eyesore, er Nassau Coliseum.
Monday is a key day in the team's future as Nassau County, New York residents will be asked to take on even more of a tax burden there to keep the team there and build a minor league ballpark.
Ten years ago, in a different economy, it's possible they would have signed on despite already owning some of the highest property taxes in the nation.
But this is a different time, and with Long Islanders fleeing New York faster than viewers leave an Amy Fisher movie the burden will fall on fewer taxpayers.
What's more, the team's on-ice performance has been poor to mediocre for decades.
Long gone are memories of Mike Bossy, Billy Smith and Bryan Trottier and four straight Stanley Cups.
The team now boasts a few potentially exciting youngsters who should get the chance to shine in another market.
The fishsticks probably won't get the chance to stick it to Nassau County taxpayers.
Goodbye Islanders, and thanks for (long ago) memories.
