Jim Dandy: Thome Blasts 600th Homer
August 16th 2011 02:57
It took 21 seasons and five stops to do it, but Jim Thome cracked his 600th career homer Monday night as his Minnesota Twins topped the Detroit Tigers 9-5.
It marked his second homer of the night, the 48th time he has enjoyed multi-homer games in a future Hall of Fame career.
Thome smoked a 2-1 breaking ball from left-hander Daniel Schlereth for No. 600, his second blast of the night.
Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Sammy Sosa are the other players to reach the plateau.
Thome may not be as big a name as some of the other players in the elite group, but he probably should be.
Thome, who has also played most famously for the Indians, along with the White Sox, Phillies and Dodgers also boasts over 1,650 RBI and a career batting average over .275.
He is also a class act who has accomplished his feats without some of the fanfare of other great players.
But Thome certainly deserves his place in the discussion of who are the top power hitters to ever play the game.
