From Twins To Tribe: Thome Returns To Cleveland
August 26th 2011 02:49
You can come home again.
Jim Thome will indeed return to the Cleveland Indians, the place where he has hit more than half (334) of his 600 career homers thanks to a trade by the Minnesota Twins Thursday.
The Twins don't even know what they are getting in exchange for the all-time great, but what they are giving him is far more important.
Cleveland is slipping further and further behind the Detroit Tigers, 6 1/2 games as of Thursday, so it gives him a chance to make an impact on a possible playoff team.
Although it's been over a decade since he played for the Tribe, Cleveland has enormous respect and love for its one-time hero, who once clubbed 52 homers in a campaign.
"Jim Thome is a Hall of Fame-caliber player and person," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. "He has meant so much to this organization -- both on and off the field -- and it is an honor to bring him back in an Indians uniform where he created so many great memories. Having his bat and presence in the middle of the lineup certainly improves our team."
It will be interesting to see if Thome can propel the Indians back over .500 and back into the AL Central race.
