Eli-te Manning? Giants Quarterback Is No Tom Brady

August 17th 2011 10:09
What is it about New York quarterbacks and running their mouths these days?

Is there something in that famous water that also produces some of the best bagels and pastries in the world?

First, Jets quarterback told GQ he wanted to "fight" coach Rex Ryan over nearly getting yanked from a game vs. the Fins last season.

Now Giants quarterback Eli Manning is trying to state the case he compares favorably to Patriots signal-caller Tom Brady.

"I consider myself in that class and Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he's a great player and what you've seen with him is he's gotten better every year and he started off winning championships and I think he's a better quarterback now than what he was, in all honesty, when he was winning those championships," Manning told ESPN Tuesday.

I have watched Tom Brady, I have seen him lead the Patriots to four Super Bowls, with three wins, and let me tell you something Eli Manning:

"You are NO Tom Brady!"

E-lie Manning?
Eli Manning

Perhaps Eli is swayed by the fact the Giants impressively broke up the Pats perfect season for Brady's lone setback in the big game, but the comparisons end there.

Brady, with 261 touchdowns to just 103 interceptions while successfully completing 63.6 percent of his passes, is already an all-time great.

Eli, meanwhile, isn't even the best quarterback in his family though that's no insult with the great Peyton Manning.

I hate to "pick", but Eli tossed an awful 25 interceptions last season and while his lifetime numbers are respectable (156-113) they are not even in Brady's league.

If Eli is trying to build up his confidence after a disappointing season in which he regressed behind center that is understandable.

But if he truly believes he is as good as Brady, however, he is downright delusional.

Let me ask you this, what was Eli supposed to say? It was a catch 22 question. If he says he's not in Brady's class, people are going to say "See, he has no confidence". And if he says he is in the same class as Brady, people are going to start talking about it waayyy too much- like they are now- and Eli will seem like he's full of it. Eli realized that it's better to sound like Jay Cutler than somebody who might have difficulty leading one of the best franchises in history to another Super Bowl. Eli is a very good QB, tenth on my list, the majority of his interceptions came because his receivers can't run routes. He also had a handful of picks that were drops by his receivers that turned into picks. He had a really unlucky season last year, ask KC Joyner. Also, notice how he never said that Brady was worse or just as good. All he said was that they were in the "same class". This means that Eli is saying "Hey, I'm a great QB in my own right, and I've won before too so you can't use that argument against me". I think people are taking this out of context, and I have no idea why these sorts of things gain so much steam.

Yeah, it is hard to see how Eli thinks he compares to Brady, though he is a great quarterback. I agree with Joe, the media grabs a hold of things and takes it all out of context. Eli said what he had to say to keep him and his teammates pumped up.

pretty passionate about this joe..that's good! always appreciate your comments. Eli reached a bit on this...he needs to win a second Super Bowl before he can even be in a discussion w/Brady in my opinion. I am a HUGE giants fan, but that one was a little flukey....great....but flukey...NBA Geek: you are right, he does have to show his teammates confidence and better decisions on field will help him and them...if he has the weapons this seasons...
