Doh, Bart! Jets' Scott Prefers Punishing Practices
July 21st 2011 17:29
For better or worse, New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott is "old school".
He thinks eliminating "two a days", that is two practices per day, as the NFL is considering in the new CBA would be a bad thing for the quality of play.
"I think it's wimping out, making football more soft," Scott said, according to the Newark Star Ledger. "No reason to try and make camp easy.
"I get concerned you're making football players weaker because you don't push them past that threshold. ... I get concerned with the same thing with the quarterback stuff, that they turn it into flag football; they turn it into little pansy stuff."
I commend Scott for his toughness, but I think he is being short sighted about cutting back to one practice per day.
Surely, he must know the average shelf life of an NFL player is just 3 1/2 seasons long.
Surely, he must be watching weather forecasts and knows this has been one of the most brutally hot summers on record.
Cutting back to one practice doesn't mean a player still can't work out at the gym or study film or hit the books.
In fact, fewer practices may mean less injuries, better play during the season, longer careers and a wider window of earning opportunity for players.
It sounds like a win-win situation, in fact, if Scott will think it through.
