Cheap Fuel In The Future?: Scientists Create Oil Pooing Bacteria (LINK)
June 17th 2008 03:03
They've done it. Scientists have created bacteria that produce crude oil as a waste product. The world rejoyces. Don't start lead footing it around the streets again for now though, they say they're still a while off mass production. Thus, high petrol prices will still remain.
I give this 6 out 10 Heaps Goods. Whilst it's a huge step in the right direction, it's not going to make fuel cheaper right now, I want everything, yesterday. Gosh, I am so sick of swallowing petrol accidently when I siphon it from my neighbour's cars already.
Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Mr Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us. Not that Mr Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls “renewable petroleum”. After that, he grins, “it’s a brave new world”.
However, to substitute America’s weekly oil consumption of 143 million barrels, you would need a facility that covered about 205 square miles, an area roughly the size of Chicago.
